Victorian barley growers were shouted an afternoon session of Australia’s best beer this week. Asahi Beverages hosted the event at Exchange Hotel, Horsham to celebrate the continued success of their Victorian Barley Program.
The program is a partnership between Asahi and Riordan Grain established in 2021. It has provided the core network for the delivery of Asahi’s commitment to a sustainable supply chain while ensuring the highest quality ingredients for its renowned beers including VB, Carlton Draught, and Great Northern.
Riordan’s work directly with barley growers to manage their grain contracts, logistics, and delivery of quality malt to Asahi’s breweries.
Mark Lewis, Chief Commercial Officer, Riordan Grain is very pleased with the success of the program “we have more than 150 growers in our network with a focus on producing premium quality malt barley. So far, we have managed more than 160 thousand tonnes delivered to the brewery to produce the finest beer.”
“This program is an example of sustainable supply chain management on a macro scale. From the farm to the pot the grain is managed, and integrity is assured. Our contracting and logistics program achieves real efficiencies for both the growers and Asahi, which results in better performance across the board”
Horsham barley grower Tim Rethus appreciates his involvement in the program. “Having a direct relationship with the end consumer of our grain gives an extra dimension to what we do on the farm. It means we focus on grain quality from the time we choose our variety, all the way through the growing season to harvest and delivery.
“Working together with Riordan’s for contracts and logistics makes planning our farm operations easier, and we have greater confidence for our planning knowing that we have a firm market with Asahi for our grain.”
Dave Engel, Regional Category Head Raw Materials, Asahi Beverages was keen to celebrate with the team at Horsham, and shared insights about the future of the beer and beverage industry. “Food security, sustainable agriculture and environmental responsibility are a key focus for our global business, and we are proud of this program and what we are able to achieve here in Victoria.”
“We look forward to another great year, as we hope for rain, and many more reasons to celebrate with our team!”
