Robert Riordan, Owner and Managing Director of Riordan Fuels, has announced his retirement from daily operations’ management of the business he founded nearly 60 years ago, effective 28 February 2025. Robert’s step into retirement is one made in great health and at an opportune time to allow a successful management transition.
Robert began his journey in 1965 when he purchased the Shell Distributorship for Southwestern Victoria and his first service station in Colac, Victoria. Over time the business expanded with a network of service stations until in 1990 he and his family relocated to Geelong to go into partnership in the Geelong Distributorship for the Shell Co. Since that time Riordan Fuels has grown into one of Victoria’s leading private and independent fuel distributors. The company now boasts an extensive unmanned tank and bulk distribution network across Victoria, and Southern NSW. Riordan Fuels is a large customer of Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery.
Under Robert’s leadership, the company has continued to thrive while maintaining a strong commitment to the communities it serves.
Beyond his business achievements, Robert has been an active member of various community organizations, consistently advocating for rural issues. His dedication was recognized in 2022 when he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his contributions to the fuel industry, Water Authority Boards, Marcus Oldham College, and his generous support of regional communities.
In a letter to customers, Mr. Riordan expressed heartfelt gratitude for their loyalty and support, which have been instrumental in the company’s growth. He also acknowledged the dedication of many long-standing staff members who have played a crucial role in Riordan Fuels’ success.
As he steps down, Robert is confident in the company’s future under the leadership of Brent Squires, General Manager Fuels. Brent will report to Mark Lewis, Chief Commercial Officer, who in turn reports to Jim Riordan, Managing Director of the Riordan Group.
“Our locally owned, family-operated business will continue to serve you well, and I thank you for your patronage over the years,” said Mr. Riordan. “I wish you all the best in your business endeavors.”
